BPE News has spoken to, The One Stop Sweetie Shop, located in Battle about the challenges facing small businesses locally at the moment. Owner, Sarah discussed with me, the lack of support for local businesses, inflation, rises in rates and taxes plus more.
BPE News has spoken to the owner of The One Stop Sweetie Shop in Battle about the pressures facing independent businesses across East Sussex, with rising costs, inflation and a lack of support among the biggest concerns.
Sarah, who owns the family-run sweet shop, said many small businesses are continuing to face difficult trading conditions despite signs that inflation has eased from previous highs.
She told BPE News: “Running a small business isn’t easy but things are getting harder. Every cost seems to have increased, whether it’s stock, electricity bills, water bills, and even just general day to day expenses. You have to think carefully about every decision you make.”
Sarah also highlighted concerns over business rates and taxation, saying they place additional pressure on independent retailers.
“Small businesses are the backbone of the local economy, but it can sometimes feel like we’re overlooked. Every increase in rates or taxes makes a real difference when you’re a small family business. More support for independent businesses is something that is needed because they play such a very important role in our communities.”
Despite those challenges, Sarah said the support from customers has kept the business going.
“We honestly can’t thank our customers enough. Every person that visits, purchases items and place orders, or simply recommends us to a friend is helping to keep our small business going. Their loyalty and kindness mean the world to us.”
Small businesses play a vital role in East Sussex’s economy, providing employment, attracting visitors and supporting local supply chains. However, many continue to face higher operating costs and changing consumer spending habits.
As businesses across the county navigate these pressures, owners such as Sarah hope that greater support for independent retailers and continued backing from local customers will help secure the future of high streets and local shopping destinations.
